The Villages of Bhalukasuni and Naranpur are involved in the protection of Sajjangarh section of the Nilagiri forest range. The Villagers depend mainly on agriculture, government services and rearing of livestock for their livelihoods. They also collect and use non-timber forest products like Mahula, Kendu and Charakoli as well as thorny trees and bushes for firewood. Conservation efforts began in the 1970s when the Forest Department handed over a patch of forest to the Villagers to protect it and utilize its forest products owing to the massive decline of forests of the Nilagiri forest range in the years preceeding that.
