Bhetanai Village is an area of tropical grassland interspersed with agricultural lands. This agricultural land, along with the fallow lands and small hillocks with ephemeral streams, form the habitat for the threatened Blackbuck, a species of antelope. The main source of livelihood for the community living in this area is agriculture. Their folklore and narratives describe the Blackbuck as a good omen and harbinger of rain. These beliefs are what inspire the community to protect the Blackbuck in these regions. The Forest Department’s Van Suraksha Samiti (VSS) also provides financial support which indirectly encourages and incentivises youth in conservation.
