Majority of the inhabitants of Gadiyajur Village are landless and thus depend on forest resources for survival while the others work as daily wage laborers. Initially the Villagers faced problems in protecting the forest because they were unable to balance their livelihood activities with forest protection efforts. Eventually the brave efforts of a single individual who started patrolling the forest on his own led to revival of the forest. Finally, Villagers implimented the thengapali system for forest patrolling. A collective fund was created and people started collecting, using as well as selling forest products such as firewood, bamboo, etc. to sustain themselves and the efforts of protection.
