The Madumar forest has been conserved by the community since the time it was part of the Orchcha
Kingdom, a princely state. The livestock population of Madumar Village is much higher than the neighbouring Villages. The large number of livestock and its dependency on the Village forest for fodder along with fuel wood is what led to the community’s concern about resource degradation. The forest cover had almost depleted due to exploitation, resulting in extreme shortage of fuel wood and fodder. This led to active conservation efforts by the community. In 1996 the Village Forest Protection Committee was formed in 1996. However, the committee has not formed its own bye-laws and follows the rules and regulations drafted by the Forest Department for protection of the forest and benefit sharing mechanism.
