Maneshwar village is known for its three-century old Shiva Temple which is the main area for conserving the Indian soft-shelled turtle. This turtle is a globally threatened species due to poaching and trading for its meat. The turtles within the pokhari, or the traditional water tank in the temple, are not only protected but also adored and worshipped. These turtles also help to keep the pond clean. This pokhari is perfect for the turtles because the banks can be used to lay their eggs without any threats and it is connected to canals throughout the village through which the turtles can enter the village. The tank however due to a natural aging process needs renovation to ensure that the turtle's habitat is in proper condition.
