Conservation efforts began in 1984 when a retired havildar, Kartar Singh, came back to his village and saw the destruction of the surrounding forest and vegetation. He mobilised the village and joined the Joint Forest Management program. The village formed a Forest Protection Committee (FPC) and MMD under this program. There has been regeneration of the forest and this has been beneficial for the villagers. The main threats that the villagers face are from the nomadic camel herders who don’t follow the rules of the FPC and the illegal sand mining that occurs near the village. The Forest Department (FD) hasn’t given the villagers adequate support in dealing with these issues.
