Deomali hill is the highest peak of Odisha. The residents of Sana Baraband and other Villages are protecting the forest cover on the hill. The Sana Baraband Village is dependent on agriculture. However, they have now stopped practising shifting cultivation and use the downhill area of Deomali for farming. After realising how shifting cultivation was affecting the forest, Villagers decided to protect it, mainly for firewood, soil conservation and the preservation of green cover. Women have played an important role in conservation here. According to the community, women have more knowledge on trees or bushes that may be cut for firewood, which in turn helps to maintain the natural balance in biodiversity.
