The people from the Udupuria village have been successful in saving a natural nesting ground of the painted storks. Water hyacinth started taking over the pond in 1997 and by 1998 it was difficult for the painted storks to make their nests at this pond. In 1999, a local NGO (Hadothi naturalists Society) and the villagers worked together to remove all the water hyacinth from this pond and this led to an all-time high of painted storks breeding at the pond. The local media extensively covered this effort by the villagers and this helped encourage the villagers to conduct a plantation drive in 2004 to make space for more storks. They have been trying to open a chick-rearing centre near the village for these birds.
