A DEFINED CCA is a territory that fulfils the 3 criteria: 
1) The community is the main decision-maker. 
2) There are systems, rules and regulations in place for conservation. 
3) The effort is leading towards conservation.

A DISRUPTED CCA may include:
 - A territory under control of local communities that is in a poor state of conservation
 - A well-conserved territory where communities have been removed and deprived of management control
 - A territory which is a de facto CCA on ground but where there is no way of accommodating local communities under existing national legislation

A DESIRED CCA could include new or reconstituted communities that have developed a common identity for themselves and for their territory as a CCA. (For e.g., a territory of a community relocated onto new land, working to develop a bond with it and to form a governing mechanism and positive practices)

People and decision making

Other Recognised Status 

Sacred groves are patches of trees that have special religious importance for the local communities. They are usually inviolate zones where hunting and logging and sometimes even collection of produce are not permitted. In most cases, communities believe in the presence of a deity within the grove. There are also ecosystems other than forests that are considered sacred by several communities.
