Krishi Avam Paristhitiki Vikas Sansthan (KRAPAVIS), based in Alwar, Rajasthan, was established in 1992 and is dedicated to surveying, studying, and protecting Orans-Deobanis across the Aravalli and Thar Desert regions. In 2021, KRAPAVIS published the Oran Atlas of Aravallis of Rajasthan. Building on this work, its 2024 publication, Orans of Thar—A Passage to Jaisalmer, presents the results of nearly two years of intensive field research and mapping of 100 Orans in Jaisalmer district, located in the heart of the Thar Desert. This comprehensive study examines the physical characteristics, biodiversity, threats, ownership, governance, ecosystem services, and cultural significance of these sacred sites.
KRAPAVIS is actively involved in several conservation efforts to protect and revive the Orans-Deobanis, including:
(i) Revitalizing traditional water storage systems within the Orans to provide water for both wildlife and village livestock.
(ii) Enhancing vegetation cover by removing invasive species like Prosopis juliflora, planting native species suited to the habitat, and reseeding with perennial grasses.
(iii) Raising community awareness, particularly among younger generations, to encourage their involvement in Oran activities.
(iv) Advocating for better management and protection of Orans.
Through these initiatives, KRAPAVIS has embarked on a comprehensive restoration effort in and around Orans-Deobanis, focusing on revitalizing critical water storage structures. This includes the creation of Oran Samitis (Oran Committees) at the village level to oversee these efforts. In a commitment to gender equality, each committee is mandated to include at least 33% women, ensuring diverse and inclusive community involvement.
The restoration work targets essential traditional water resources within the Orans, such as Johad/Talabs (ponds), Nadi (small ponds), Beris, Tankas, and Kunds (water storage tanks), which play a crucial role in supporting wildlife, livestock, and local communities. By empowering communities and addressing environmental sustainability, KRAPAVIS is fostering a holistic approach to water conservation that benefits both nature and local communities.
Building on these restoration efforts, KRAPAVIS has focused on reintroducing indigenous species in the Orans-Deobanis. In addition, a concerted effort has been made to remove invasive species like Vilayati-babul (Prosopis juliflora) from the Agor (catchment area) of water bodies, ensuring a healthier ecosystem. The active involvement of the Oran Samitis has been crucial in driving these activities, promoting community participation and stewardship.
To further enhance local engagement and awareness, community meetings are regularly held, and an informative 8-page bulletin in Hindi, Oran-Devani Re Baat, is published quarterly. This bulletin shares case studies and updates on conservation work, fostering a deeper understanding of the Orans' ecological and cultural value.
The recent Supreme Court judgment on Orans is a testament to KRAPAVIS' efforts in safeguarding the Orans. Through these combined efforts, KRAPAVIS is committed to preserving the Orans' environmental health and cultural heritage, ensuring they remain a vital resource for future generations.
